Your message Hello. I am a final year student at Leeds University studying BA Sociology. My final year dissertation is a sociological study of Tourette Syndrome. As I am not a sufferer, nor do I know anyone who suffers from it, I would really like some information of lifestyles, and in particular issues to do with social inclusion. I understand that this is a sensitive issue but if anyone is willing to help with my research then please would you email me and let me know. Thanks....

Your message I am a mother of 2, son and daughter, my daughter is 14yrs and has tourettes, she was diagnosed with having tourettes at the age of 11. My daughter suffers very badly with this syndrome, meaning not only having tics but she suffers severely with (coprolalia)shouts obscenities and about everything else that is involved with tourettes. Things do not seem to get any better. my daughter has tried alsorts of drugs and has now just started on sulpiride and is still on ritalin. We have tried to get help from all sorts of DRs but with hand on heart...they don't know what the hell to do with all sorts of explanations not one has helped. she even went to an assessment center for 6months to which i wished i never agreed to because it was no help at all...she now goes to a boarding school which is not for her tourettes but because she has a phobia with schools..my story of these fours years is long so cut a long story short, is there any help out there????????? please email me

Your message I am an advertising student. Currently I am working on a brief to design a campaign which raises awareness of Tourettes Syndrome. I would be most grateful if there is anyone with the syndrome who could write to me conveying their feelings, what it is like to live with tourettes and generally anything that they think would help. Your message I am the father of a 13 yr. old boy with TS. We tried Haldol for a while until we found out about the possible side effects. We have been taking him to see a homeopath/chiropractor/aromatherapist with some success. I am particularly interested in pursuing avenues of alternative therapy. Adam has reached a point where he feels utterly helpless. I am worried that he will soon enter a deep depression unless we can pull him out of this stage. Any suggestions would be helpful for my wife and me. Cheers.

Your message I am a 28 year old singer songwriter living in West Sussex and am actively seeking other tourettes people for friendship and chat.I've had it for years...and I've never met anyone else with it yet, although of course I know how many have it. I find music comes to me freely, like a lucid dream, and also find the expression in music somewhat like an excorcism...a true healer. If there is anyone out there who'd like to correspond, then please feel free to mail me. I made another entry on this site a while back with the e-mail address [email protected] this has since been lost in cyberspace!!!! My new e-mail is [email protected] Please do contact me....and of course if I can be of any help to baffled parents or kids alike then that would be a pleasure. Cheers and I hope you all stay creative and positive. Enjoy the ups!!!! Dan.

Your message Hi.... I'm a mom of 2 children. We have a daughter who is 5 and a son who is 12. Our son has CP, Epilepsy, and is Developmentally Delayed. The Cp is very mild, the Epilepsy is controlled by meds for the most part, and he continues to make gains developmentally all the time. He is a wonderful child and I wouldn't trade him for anything in the world! In Jan of 2000, we began to notice signs common for TS and OCD. For those of you that are familiar with TS you will understand that it takes a frustratingly long time to eliminate other possibilities that these symptoms could be a result of, and so it wasn't until the spring of 2001 that he was diagnosed as having TS and OCD. His initial challenges with this were very mild compared to the extreme that we have been experiencing these last couple of months. We need to find and talk with other families who are dealing with these issues. Because of his developmental delays, his comprehension and his ability to express himself is more limited than another child, which adds to our challenges that we face in dealing with this. I would welcome you with open arms if you are interested in sharing ideas and experiences that may help us as a family, and I'd be willing to return that support to you as well. We are in Canada, but we are interested in talking with families in all locations.

Your message I am a Child Care Practitioner and have a young man aged 20 allocated to me. He was diagnosed with TS in September 2000 and prescribed medication. Unfortunately he is a person with a very troubled background and has been in Local Authority care since the age of 12 due to his behavioural problems and also drug/alcohol abuse. He does not take his prescribed medication as he feels it has too many side effects. He was homeless, but placed in homeless accommodation recently. He was evicted from this accommodation due to his behaviour. At present he is again placed in homeless accommodation but has been served with a letter informing him that he has made himself intentionally homeless due to his behaviour. We now have 21 days to come up with a good argument as to why this is not so. We need to dispute the sentence in the letter, "However, although your health problems no doubt contribute to your behavioural problems it is felt that you are responsible for your own actions". Before being found intentionally homeless he had been on the priority housing need list for almost a year and had been living rough. Can anyone assist me with professional advice?

Your message My son was diagnois with tourette syndrome about 1 1/2 years ago. He is 8 years old. At first I didn't know what it was until I took him to several doctors. No one knew what it was. Teachers tried to tell me that he had a very bad behavior problem. I know it was something more than that. Finally, I was reading a book called "Icy Sparks" and that's when I took him back to the doctors. She suggested I take him to see a neurologist. Since then he has been medicated and is doing pretty good. He lives a normal life, plays football and it keeps him calm. Although he still has mild tics, and they do flair up when he's excited, or scared, he has learned how to calm himself down. If there is anybody out there that is from the Washington Pennsylvania area and needs the name of a good neurologist, her name is Dr. Shoba Asthana. Her office is located in Charleroi Pennsylvania. She is one of the best in the area. Hopefully my son will not need to be medicated for the rest of his life. We do sit down and talk about it and his teachers are very much aware of this condition. We also took the time to explain it to his friends, so they won't make fun of him.

Your message Just to let you know that my daugher has Tourette Syndrome and was diagnosed at 7, she is now 11. There is great hope as when she was diagnosed, it seemed a very rare thing to have. However, I now realise that it is not so rare and I am ever hopeful of a cure. We have been to see Mary Robertson in London and she put our minds at rest that in most cases the condition disappears with age, we hope so. But nevertheless, she is a lovely, happy little girl even though life sometimes gets hard for us

Your message My 12 yr old daughter was diagnosed with TS about 4 yrs ago she showed symptoms from the age of 6, but it took a long time for me to convince any one that I was not imagining it! We go to the local childrens centre and the TS clinic in London. We tried Haliperidol but she reacted really badly to that, and we have tried all different kinds of complementary therapies etc etc. We do laugh about it aswell though, one of the things she often shouts out at the wrong times is "Twickenham!" it is certainly an ice-breaker in a crowded lift! looking forward to hearing from anyone out there.

Your message April 2, 2001 Hi, everyone. I left a previous message that I wanted to change, but could not get into it. I'm a youthful 51-yer-old who has both OCD and Tourette's. The TS was diagnosed only about 3 months ago. I suppose that like so many people, my TS symptoms wax and wane. My OCD is under good medical control. I would like to receive more information about your group, in particular news bulletis, forum announcements, news and views, book reviews, and upcoming conferences. There is one English-speaking TS group in Montreal that meets only once a month, and there is also a French-speakig group. I also belong to an Internet group called TSWorld, but unfortunately it has very few members. I hope to hear from you soon. Cheers. (I think that's what Brits say.) Harvey [email protected]

Your message I've learned about turret's disease several years ago via a priest friend that had to control/discipline himself immensely (by not shouting out vulgar obscenities, etc.) while celebrating daily liturgy or giving the homily in his church. My second encounter with turret's was through a parishioner who attends our church. Her symptoms would occur at public worship services, in smaller group meetings, and even during secretarial assistance with one or two of us, and also just working, cleaning, and decorating in church throughout the year with just a few people present! Today, it's been brought to my attention once again through a friend in Levittown, PA., whose sister's eight year old son living in a nearby town, has been examined and diagnosed at the Philadelphia's Children Hospital with this neurological disorder! THANKS to your informational set up on the Internet, I've been personally updated once again & have been able to directed others to this educational/medical site!

Your message I'd never really thought about searching for a site dedicated to Tourettes, so was really surprised when I finally did and discovered this one. The message forum is so interesting and helpful, but most of all it's so great to feel less alone with Tourettes. I was diagnosed with T.S. 12 years ago and despite very understanding family and friends I've always felt that unless you have it people cannot possibly know what it is really like. It's so good to be able to air ideas and run things by others who really do know and care. Bravo to everyone who contributes!

Your message The site is well thought out, interesting and full of sound information. I only wish that I had had access to such information years agan. My TS is very atypical and has been both a bane and a blessing. It definitely helps with ma 'work'- I'm a noveliest, poet, short story writer, etc, but other aspects have led me one hell of a ride through ups, downs, sideways, emotional break-ups/downs/all ways and all the rest of it. Funnily enough I'm better having kicked haldol into touch, though I tick more, esoecially verbally - not much of a body ticker. I am interested in others who have used their TS in creative ways, especially if the TS is somewhat atypical. Anyroad, love the site, will be back for more, ciao for now, slan agus beannacht...

Your message AT 61 YRS YOUNG I AM WRITING IN REGARD FOR MY GRANDSON WHO HAS BEEN DIAGNOSED WITH TOURETTES SYNDROME. WITHOUT QUESTIONING HIS PARENTS EXTENSIVELY I STILL WOULD LIKE TO KNOW MORE ABOUT IT. IS IT SOMETHING THAT ONE IS BORN WITH - ALWAYS, OR CAN IT ALSO DEVELOP LATER SAY THROUGH STRESS OR DISTURBANCE FOR EXAMPLE? MY GRANDSON HAS BEEN PRESCRIBED MEDICATION - I AM NOT A STRONG ACCEPTOR OF PUSHING DRUGS INTO PEOPLE WITHOUT HAVING FIRST CONSIDERED ALTERNATIVE BUT ACCEPTED METHODS OF HANDLING MEDICAL PROBLEMS. THE MEDIA TODAY IS DEMONSTRATING THAT POSSIBLY OUR RESORTING TO DRUGS ADLIB IS NOT NECESSARILY THE BEST WAY FORWARD - MIS-DIAGNOSIS SHOULD ALSO BE CONSIDERED

Your message My 16-year-old son has mild-to-ressessed TS + mild-to-medium ocd. He is in denial of the condition. Probably this is his way of coping with not wanting to be "different." However, my wife and I find that this attitude makes it really difficult to move forward. He was diagnosed with TS+OCD in Sept 1998 at age 13 by a local child psychiatrist familiar with the condition, when there was a sudden appearance of tics (no obvious tics previously)plus strange behaviour more related to the OCD. We were given a couple of leaflets from the TSA(UK): we contacted them to receive further help. We are a family subscribing to the TSA(UK), and were referred to Dr Hugh Rickards of the QEH B'ham, for confirmation of the diagnosis, who also carried out tests to rule out other conditions, owing to the "atypical presentation." I got involved in a couple of newsgroups based in the States, and found internet info on various websites particularly helpful (and even therapeutic!). However, my son "made" me remove all references to TS and ocd from the house, incl. from the computer, forcing me into "hiding," as far as keeping contact with folk, and storage of literature. For this reason I wish to remain anonymous, but am prepared to operate under a pseudonym (how about "Flare?") For the time being, though, I prefer this story to be kept private. How do you find the Tourette Syndrome (UK) Association? My wife and myself have been to one AGM each, which were both helpful, interesting, but also disturbing. PS I'm using my works e-mail address - well away from home!

Your message I'd just like to say I think this website is brilliant. My friend has TS so I decided to find out more about it, and this is the best site I've come across so far, as it's very informative. I've had nervous habits since I was 4 and my mom took me to the doctors, but they told her it would go away. I think the habits did get better for a while, but they came back when I was about 8 or 9, which I was teased about at school. I've had these habits, which are mainly facial twitches, all the time since then and now I'm 15 and they seem to be worse again. I'm not sure if I have TS or not, as I haven't seen a doctor about it, but I'd just like to say thankyou to the owner of this website for bringing me a step closer to the truth, as all I really want is a name for what I've got to prove to myself that I'm not paranoid.

Your message I'm a 27 year old singer-songwriter who has suffered and gained from having tourettes all of my life, although I was only diagnosed at the beggining of this year. It's funny, but even some people who think they know me well, still refuse to believe it. Under all these circumstances we must, all of us, stick together and zap them with our humour!! Bless all of you who have, and still are, fighting for a true non-sensationalist view for people unaware of tourettes through all forms of media, and bless all of you doctors and specialists. I write a lot of prose on tourettes, as well as my music, so if anyone knows of any specialist publishers I would be more than gratefull for your help. Feel free, anyone who suffers, and anyone who looks after anyone who does, to contact me and I'm sure with good correspondance we can chase the devil out of all of us, and into the mind's of all those sceptics.Even if it was just for a day I think it would be too much for them.If theres any younsters out there who are suffering then take no notice, for they are only covering for their own insecurities and secretly, I think that they would like to be just like you.Never forget that your'e special, any of you. Bless you all and hope to hear from some of you soon. Cheers!! Dan. xxx

Your message thank you for a wonderful site! what a great idea - i have often thought a site like this would be most useful for parents of gts-patients, but never got round to making one. i have a son of 8 with moderate tourette - but even moderate is enough to put a household into constant turmoil! now that he is at boy scout camp for a week i realise again how strained we, the parents, are, and how we figuratively speaking have to walk on tiptoes every day to keep everybody happy. (i am a mild tourette myself, which makes all this turmoil even more hectic). tourette may bring out the best in parents, sometimes and hopefully often, but at other times it also brings out the worst, with all the guilt feelings attached, that invariably come, afterwards. i may write more fully later or contribute some of my own experiences, but right now i cannot type for too long since i have rsi and should not get near a computer at all! so this goes just to say thanks for all your effort - i have ordered some of the books that i didn't know and i have also read with great compassion yours and some of the other life-stories. i can feel for you all - so thanks.

Your message I am trying to obtain information on TS and related disorders, I am concerned about my 10 year old son who has ADHD, Autistic Spectrum Disorder, ODD, he has rage attacks, but his facination with all things of a sexual nature and his racist behaviour are of concern to me, I believe that there is a type of TS that has these problems, he is currently taking Ritalin, Lithium and Catapres but with little success. Nathan does not have tics but I also believe that not every TS sufferer does, is this correct? I am very concerned about my son and what the future holds for him.

At the moment we are weaning my son of Clondine which has been on for about 4 years. His tics have gone away (hopefully) and I think that being on the pills made him depressed. Also he has a very low opinion of himself but he is I think a fantastic kid who is very intelligent and been misunderstood for many years.

Your message Hi I'm a mum whose daughter has TS, I found out about 2 years ago. Over the last 2 years I have communicated with many people regarding TS, I know all the fears and worries, especially the one of just wanting to talk to someone who understands, so if somebody just wants a chat or is at their wits end and needs a helping hand please feel free to email me. It is fantastic that tosy has now set up a site for people in the UK, although I am greatful to everyone on the US/Aust/Canada sites it is much better to be able to speak to somebody of your own culture - well done tosy - let's hope many more "tune in" to your site.
